extract-xiso vs Iso2God: Different Tools for Different Jobs

extract-xiso and Iso2God are not competitors — they work on different consoles’ images for different destinations. extract-xiso (by the XboxDev project) creates, extracts and rewrites original-Xbox XISO images. Iso2God converts Xbox 360 and original-Xbox ISOs into Games On Demand (GOD) packages for playback on a modded Xbox 360. If you remember only one sentence: extract-xiso prepares OG Xbox images; Iso2God packages games for a 360.

Both are linked from our download page (extract-xiso direct link: go/extract-xiso). GOD output from Iso2God needs a modded 360 (JTAG/RGH/BadUpdate-class) or an emulator — never a stock console.

The short answer

Questionextract-xisoIso2God
Which console’s games?Original Xbox (XISO images)Xbox 360 and original Xbox ISOs
What does it produce? An XISO image, an extracted file tree, or a rewritten (shrunk) XISOA GOD package (header file + .data folder of part files)
Create an image from a folder?Yes — -c builds an XISO from an extracted folderNo — ISO input only
Extract an image to files?Yes — -xNo
Rewrite/shrink a Redump image?Yes — -r rewrites Redump-style images into efficient XISOsOnly in the sense of its padding modes during GOD conversion

What extract-xiso actually does

extract-xiso is the standard tool of the original-Xbox (and xemu emulator) ecosystem. It has three modes: create an XISO from a folder of extracted game files, extract an XISO back into files, and rewrite a Redump-format image into the compact XISO layout emulators and tools expect. It runs on Windows, Linux and macOS, is maintained by XboxDev, and its current build (build-202609111233, September 2026) is the one we link: the Linux ZIP’s SHA-256 (c4b9fbf8…98d) matches the digest on GitHub, verified by us.

When do you reach for it? When your source is an original-Xbox game: rebuilding a Redump dump into a usable XISO, extracting an OG title to inspect or patch files, or packaging an extracted folder back into an image. If that image’s final destination is a modded Xbox 360, the XISO you produce here can then go through Iso2God — the tools chain together rather than compete.

What Iso2God actually does

Iso2God takes an ISO — Xbox 360 (XGD2/XGD3) or original Xbox — and converts it into a GOD container: a signed-format header plus a folder of data parts, installable under Content\0000000000000000\<TitleID>\00070000\ for the stock dashboard layout or scannable anywhere by custom dashboards like Aurora. Its padding modes (None / Partial / Full) control how much disc filler survives conversion, and the maintained r4dius fork adds FTP upload and metadata editing.

Iso2God does not extract images to files, does not build images from folders, and does not rewrite Redump dumps. Asking it to do extract-xiso’s job is the most common beginner mix-up between the two names.

The “exiso” name you will meet in old tutorials

Older guides use the name exiso (and “ExIso GUI”) for an earlier OG-Xbox ISO extractor. Despite the nearly identical name, it is a distinct, older codebase from XboxDev’s extract-xiso, with no maintained official home today. Treat “exiso” in a tutorial as a legacy name for the same job — extracting and rebuilding OG Xbox images — and do that job with the maintained extract-xiso instead.

Which one do you need? A decision list

  • OG Xbox Redump image → emulator-ready XISO: extract-xiso (-r).
  • Extract an OG Xbox image to files, or rebuild one from files: extract-xiso (-x / -c).
  • 360 ISO → playable GOD on a modded 360: Iso2God (or iso2god-rs — see Iso2God vs iso2god-rs).
  • OG Xbox ISO → GOD for a modded 360: Iso2God; if the source is a Redump dump, run it through extract-xiso first.
  • GOD → back to ISO: neither — that is God2Iso.

In short: reach for extract-xiso whenever the image belongs to the original Xbox, and for Iso2God whenever the destination is a modded 360’s hard drive.

A typical chained workflow, end to end

The two tools meet most often in one pipeline: an original-Xbox game that starts life as a Redump-style dump and ends it as a GOD on a modded Xbox 360. The chain looks like this:

  1. Rewrite with extract-xiso. Run the Redump image through extract-xiso’s rewrite mode (-r) to produce a compact, standard XISO — the layout emulators and downstream tools expect, without the redundant padding structure of the raw dump.
  2. Optionally inspect with extract-xiso. Extract (-x) if you need to look at or adjust individual files; re-create (-c) to package a folder back into an XISO when you are done.
  3. Convert with Iso2God. Feed the resulting ISO to Iso2God (GUI fork on Windows, or iso2god-rs anywhere) and convert to GOD, choosing a padding mode — Partial is the safe default where a game is known to be sensitive.
  4. Transfer and play. Copy the GOD to the console’s Content layout for the stock dashboard, or anywhere a custom dashboard like Aurora scans, and launch it on the modded console.

Skip the middle tool when it earns nothing: a 360 ISO never needs extract-xiso at all, and an OG Xbox game destined only for an emulator such as xemu never needs Iso2God. The chain exists for one specific journey — OG disc image to 360 GOD — and each tool does exactly its own leg of it.

Formats in one breath each

XISO is the original-Xbox disc-image layout extract-xiso creates, extracts and rewrites — the working format of the OG Xbox homebrew and emulation scene. GOD (Games On Demand) is Microsoft’s packaged format for full games on the 360: a header file plus a folder of data parts, hash-tree protected, installed under the console’s Content tree or scanned by custom dashboards. Iso2God’s whole existence is the bridge from ISO-style images (including XISO-derived OG images) into GOD; extract-xiso’s whole existence is keeping XISO images creatable, extractable and efficient. Different formats, different custodians, one overlapping audience — which is why they are compared, and why they should never be substituted for each other.

Frequently asked questions

Can extract-xiso convert a game for my Xbox 360?

Not by itself. It works with original-Xbox XISO images. To run a game as a GOD on a modded 360 you convert an ISO with Iso2God or iso2god-rs; extract-xiso’s role, if any, is preparing the OG Xbox image beforehand.

Is exiso the same program as extract-xiso?

No. They share a job description and a confusingly similar name, but exiso is an older, separate, unmaintained codebase. Use XboxDev’s extract-xiso.

Does Iso2God handle original Xbox games too?

Yes — the original tool converts both Xbox 360 and original-Xbox ISOs to GOD, and so does iso2god-rs. That overlap is exactly why the two tools get confused.

Which extract-xiso build should I download?

The current XboxDev build (build-202609111233). Our go/extract-xiso link points at that release; we verified the Linux build’s SHA-256 against GitHub’s digest.

Both tools, with their official links, are collected on the download page; the rest of the pairings are in the Comparisons hub.
